Yoga for Healthy Aging
As we age, the many years of use, misuse and abuse of our bodies begins to take its toll, creating imbalances, injuries and limitations in the body. Fascia becomes dehydrated, muscles may stiffen, and joints may lose their range of motion, making us more prone to falls and chronic health issues such as arthritis, heart disease and osteoporosis. In addition, as we age we inevitably have more grief experiences (loss of family, friends, jobs, health, etc.), which may affect our mental health making us more susceptible to depression, social isolation and anxiety. Through a regular yoga practice we can slow down or even reverse some of the effects of aging by keeping our fascia hydrated, muscles pliable and strong, our joints and bodies lubricated and juicy, and our minds calm and alert.
Yoga for Healthy Aging is designed in a similar manner as the Yoga Basics classes, which focus on the fundamental yoga postures and regulation of the breath. You will be encouraged to understand your habitual postural movements so you may learn how to move towards better posture and better health. You will be taught how to properly and safely use props (including chairs, blankets, blocks, walls and straps) to enhance the accessibility of the poses.
As I guide you through the practice, you may also receive gentle verbal recommendations from me from time to time, with the intent of enhancing your awareness and experience. Whether you are new to yoga or have been practicing for years, you likely will be able to participate in this class.
This class is offered at Seal Beach Leisure World and you must be a resident of the community to participate.
